Origins and History of Family Day

In Canada, Family Day was originally observed in Alberta in recognition of the importance of home and family to its founding pioneers.  The first Family Day was in observed in 1990.

Almost 2 decades later additional provinces throughout Canada have adopted Family Day as well.

2007 – Saskatchewan
2008 – Ontario
2013 – British Columbia
2018 – New Brunswick

The fact that there was no statutory holiday between New Year’s Day and Good Friday which could be as late as April, played heavily in to the decision to adopt Family day by the provinces above.
